How to Make a Cozy Bed

A Great Mattress is Key!

The number one key to a cozy bed is the most obvious. The mattress. Did you know, we spend a third of our lives in bed? That’s a lot of time to put up with a mattress that is uncomfortable.

You know the kind. The one that feels like we’re falling into a pit or is jabbing us throughout the night with its coils.

But just because a mattress breaks the bank, doesn’t mean it’s a great quality mattress.

About six years ago we were in the market for a new mattress. After doing a lot of research, I decided on this one from Lull. Very affordable for a master bedroom. And has held up so well. Feels just as good today as it did when we first got it.

While I love the quality and comfort of our Lull mattress, it is a little more than I wanted to spend on my kids’ beds. So, for the other four beds in our home, I’ve chosen Zinus. An excellent mattress, with many thickness options available, this mattress is affordable and comfortable.

When choosing the mattress thickness, I like to go with 10-12″. This thickness offers great support.

Another thing to consider when shopping for a mattress is the purpose you want it to serve.

Aside from a good night’s sleep, are you looking for more lumbar support? Do you suffer from back pain? If so, you’ll want to purchase a firm mattress.

Are you a hot sleeper, waking up in a sweat every night? Then a cooling mattress would give you that comfortable bed you’re looking for.

Don’t Forget the Mattress Pad

A nice thick mattress topper is the icing on the cake. For the longest time, I didn’t believe all of their hype and couldn’t convince myself to spend the money on one. But now that I have one, I don’t know why I waited so long.

It’s amazing the difference between a bed with a mattress topper and one without.

(Pro Tip: Don’t forget the mattress pad to protect your mattress topper.)

Often underestimated for just how good it is, a mattress topper has other benefits too. Aside from turning your bed into a cozy oasis, a mattress topper provides:

  • a cooling effect; it enhances the breathability of the mattress
  • an extra layer of cushion and support
  • prolongs the life of the mattress

Not only will a mattress topper make a new mattress feel better, it’s a great way to bring new life into an old mattress. If your current mattress has lost its comfy bed feel, add a mattress topper to get a few more years out of it. A great way to put off replacing an old mattress.

How to Make a Cozy Bed: Opt for White Sheets

Choosing the right set of sheets can make or break the coziness of a bed. But it can also leave you a little indecisive.

With so many options to choose from, how do you know you’ve decided on the right ones? Here’s some tips:

  • Cotton sheets: Great choice if you’re wanting more of a lightweight feel.
  • Flannel sheets: As their name suggests, these sheets will keep you nice and warm. Great for those cold winter months.
  • Linen sheets: Naturally anti-bacterial and breathable. A great sheet for everyone; but especially those with sensitive skin.
  • Percale: 100% organic cotton. So soft and breathable. Great for those who typically sweat a lot at night.

What’s the one thing you notice about every hotel bed? They always have white sheets. For that true luxurious, hotel feel swap out your colored sheets for white sheets. This one simple change to white bedding, will instantly give your bed that crisp, clean look.

For convenience sake, invest in two sets of sheets. Makes it much easier when it’s time to wash the sheets. You can pull off the old ones, and immediately make the bed with the new ones. No need to wait for the sheets to wash.

Choosing the Right Duvet

Moving onto our next layer, it’s time to pick out the perfect duvet. The most important part of the duvet, when it comes to comfort, is the duvet insert. Do you splurge a little and go with a down comforter? Or save a little with a poly-filled option?

My duvet insert of choice is this poly-filled duvet. I like that I can use it year-round. Not too heavy in the summer, but yet cozy and warm in the winter months. It’s the perfect fluffy duvet that leaves my bed looking billowy and soft.

But don’t stop with the duvet insert. Be sure to cover it with a duvet cover. Duvet inserts are not easy to wash and some even require drycleaning. Therefore, using a duvet cover will protect your duvet insert. Plus, it’s much easier to clean the cover than the insert.

Aside from the ease of washing the duvet cover, it’s also where your design style can shine. Whether you prefer or patterned cover or a solid cover, there are so many options to choose from.

I prefer a more neutral solid color duvet cover. To give my bedroom that high-end hotel feel, I opt for this white duvet cover.

Along with a duvet, you might also prefer to have a nice soft blanket to snuggle in with. It could be a light blanket, heavy blanket, or heated blanket. But the right blanket can give your bed an even more cozy look.

Once again, I prefer to stick with a neutral solid color blanket for that true luxe bed look.

Pile on the Pillows

Actually, I prefer to not have too many pillows. For a king bed, I like to have a total of 7 pillows. Here’s how it breaks down:

  • 2 white pillows for sleeping laying flat
  • 2 white euro shams pillows, laying flat, on top of the 2 sleeping pillows
  • 2 white sham textured pillows propped up against the flat pillows
  • 1 long lumbar textured pillow. This pillow is my pop of color, with green hues and a soft pink color tone.

The key is to have sleep-worthy pillows and decorative. Make sure the sleep-worthy provide you the comfort and support you need. These are my go-to pillows. I’ve even gifted these to people. They’re so good! Comfortable and I don’t wake up sweating at night.

For your decorative pillows, have fun! This is where you can add visual interest, with a pop of color, to a neutral bed.

Add a Quilt at the End of the Bed

A soft quilt at the foot of the bed, gives your bed that layered look. Which, in turn, adds dimension and depth.

Choose a color that will accentuate your throw pillows. I have a soft rose color quilt tri-folded at the end of my bed. It pairs well with my lumbar pillow’s muted green and soft pink hues.

To add to the layering effect, drape one of your cozy throw blankets over the quilt. This will bring in another texture and help to give your bedroom an even more cozy vibe.

How to Make a Cozy Bed: Invest In a Good Quality Bed Frame

Most modern beds today, no longer require a box spring. The key for slatted bed frames is to ensure the slats are spaced no more than 4 inches apart from one another. This will give your mattress the support it needs.

I have a great tutorial on how to make your own slatted bed frame. Here it is, if you want to check it out.

If DIY is not your thing, here’s a great bed frame that is not only durable, but also beautiful. I bought this one for my daughter’s bedroom and it really makes the room feel cozy and luxurious.

How I Make My Bed

Are you a make your bed every morning kind of person or only when I have the extra time? For me, my day doesn’t feel ready to start til I’ve made my bed. While it’s not the first thing I do every morning, it’s right up there at the top.

But on the rare occasion I wasn’t able to make my bed in the morning, I have to make it before crawling into it at night. Yep! I’m one of those kind of people. 🙂

Here’s the layers of my bed:

  1. Mattress
  2. Mattress topper
  3. Mattress pad
  4. Fitted sheet
  5. Flat sheet (top sheet)
  6. Duvet cover with insert
  7. Another duvet cover with insert
  8. Pillows and throw pillows
  9. Quilt at foot of bed

Here’s how I make my bed:

  1. First step, I pull the fop sheet and 1st duvet to the top of the bed.
  2. I then pull the 1st duvet half way down the bed. (this duvet stays hidden)
  3. Then I pull the 2nd duvet to the top of the bed, nice and tight. Getting out all the wrinkles.
  4. I then pull that duvet back about 1/4 of the way.
  5. Then I pull the sheet back over the duvet.
  6. I’ll add my pillows (as I mentioned above).
  7. And make sure my quilt at the bottom of the bed is straightened out and looks nice.

I know it sounds like a lot, but it really doesn’t take much time. And for me, having a bed that looks inviting and oh so cozy, makes it all worth it.
