Are you tired of entering your home and noticing clutter everywhere you turn? Now may be a good time to free yourself from the mounds of junk and get your home organized in 2023. This is especially true if you plan to sell your house fast this year. Here are five steps to organizing your home for peace of mind or to ensure it sells in 2023.

5 Steps for Organizing Your Home

Step 1 – Start By Letting Go

So how do you clean a house to get it ready to sell or get it in a condition you can feel comfortable living in? Believe it or not, your organization process should start in your head. Before you pick up one item off the floor or in the closet, it is a good idea to evaluate what you need to let go of in every room of your house.

Do you need those old cowboy boots from 15 years ago? Or do you need that old kitchen appliance you only used once? Does your teen still need those toys they played with when they were seven years old? Develop a plan, take inventory of what you don’t need anymore, and start letting go. The simple act of letting go within your mind can help when it’s time to clean and really focus on organizing your home.

Step 2 – Declutter Your Home

Once you’ve decided to let go, now is the time to start physically removing the clutter in your home. Remember that you don’t have to toss everything in the garbage. Even unwanted items can be organized in the following ways.

Throw It In The Trash

Of course, anything broken, damaged, outdated, or otherwise unusable should go in the trash. Yet, there are some things you won’t be able to throw away in your standard garbage can. Your trash service may offer other services, such as junk removal or roll-away dumpsters, to help you remove an enormous amount of trash. If your trash service provider doesn’t offer these services, call around to find a company that can help you remove objects that aren’t typical home garbage.

Give to Charity

Your kids’ toys or old appliances don’t have to go in the junk pile. Instead, you can give these items to local charities. Someone in need could find your junk quite helpful.

Sell Your Items

Another option besides trashing your unusable items is to sell them. This is especially helpful if you need to raise money to help move if you plan to sell your house. For example, you can have an old-fashioned garage or yard sale. Or you can use an online marketplace to sell your old goods. Decluttering is another great step to organizing your home.

Step 3 – Downsize Large Furniture

Another way to get organized is to make more space. Aside from decluttering to create more space, you can also downsize large furniture. Big, bulky furniture can make your rooms feel much smaller than they are. If you plan to sell your home, oversized furniture can make potential buyers claustrophobic. Eliminating large furniture and replacing it with smaller pieces can help you in organizing your home.

Step 4 – Use Tools To Help In Organizing Your Home

One of the most important ways to organize is to use organization tools. Whether you get built-in bookshelves, custom closets, or space-saving storage solutions in your kitchen, these can all help put things in their place.

Instead of having books strewn around the house, place them on your new bookshelf. Likewise, if you have clean clothing piled in a chair in your room, place them in your new custom closets. Most importantly, if you have Tupperware, pots, and other dishes pouring out of your cabinets, make good use of your new kitchen storage.

Step 5 – Develop a Plan to Remain Organized

After you’ve decluttered, downsized, and used tools to help organize, it is a good idea to establish a plan to keep the junk from piling up again. Don’t let this be a one-and-done process unless, of course, you plan to sell your home afterward. Even if you stay in your home or end up in another house, develop a quarterly plan to declutter and clean so that you can avoid an overwhelming amount of junk building up in your home in the future.
