Is modern farmhouse a thing of the past? While modern farmhouse style has been on-trend for quite awhile now, many who have adapted this style are wondering if it’s on its way out. The short answer is, no. Modern farmhouse is a timeless design that will not be going away anytime soon.
Modern farmhouse is all about that comfy, cozy feel that most all of us crave in our homes. So, while some of the elements of this design style may no longer be appealing, there are several aspects of it that are here to stay. If the modern farmhouse look is your style, here’s what you need to know…
What is Modern Farmhouse Style?
The Modern Farmhouse Style, also referred to as Modern Country or Modern Rustic, is a style characterized by its clean and simple designs.
This style became increasingly popular in recent years. Thank you Chip and Joanna. 🙂 Home stylists were looking for a way to add some rustic charm to their homes without sacrificing modern conveniences!
Modern farmhouse lovers are looking for a warm and cozy atmosphere. This not only includes classic farmhouse accents such as rustic wood furnishings, natural textures, and a neutral color scheme. But also combines these essentials with contemporary or industrial elements. Clean lines and minimalist décor is what takes it from farmhouse to modern farmhouse. My mom and dad’s house is a perfect example of modern farmhouse done well…
As I have done throughout this Interior Design Style Series, I think it’s helpful to look at the history behind each style. As DeCasa Collections points out….
“Analyzing decor and furniture styles by decade, can be a great way to find inspiration for your home in the present day.”
So where did this easy living style begin?
History of this Style
Farmhouse modern style is a child of Industrial Revolution-era design, so it’s no surprise why it’s become increasingly popular in our modern lives!
While its roots lie firmly in the past, this recognizable interior was born in the early 2000’s. It became a fresh way to implement traditional rural elements.
Modern farmhouse was initially inspired by rural homes built in the 19th century. These traditional farmhouses were built to suit practical needs as people lived farther away from the city amenities and resources.
The result is a mix of old-world charm with modern-day sensibilities.
Finding the balance between charming nostalgia and contemporary styling is how you nail the farmhouse modern look. Known for its vintage looks and more urban touches, exposed wood beams, rustic wallpaper, and glossy accents also take center stage.
From Fixer Upper, Joanna Gaines inspiring white shiplap walls, to furniture with clean lines and timeless materials, this stylish blend of old and new is sure to be around for years to come.
Getting this look can be simple and affordable!

How Do I Get the Look?
If you’re inspired to get the Modern Farmhouse look, there are several key elements you should incorporate into your home design.
Modern Farmhouse style is all about creating a rustic and inviting atmosphere, while still embracing modern trends.
Start your modern farmhouse journey by choosing the main elements that you want to focus on in your space – like furniture pieces and accessories.

Natural materials and clean lines
Look for items made from natural materials such as wood, metal, or stone for an authentic farmhouse vibe. Choose simple designs that have clean lines, rather than ornate architectural details.
You can also add texture to your Modern Farmhouse space with throw pillows, blankets, or rugs in neutral colors like beige, gray, or white.
To get the overall feel of this relaxing decorating style, simply think:
- pale wood flooring and furniture
- white walls to create an airy feeling
- natural elements like jute or linen for texture
- white subway tile
- open shelves
- natural wood accents
- pendant lights
- stylish and functional barn doors with a contemporary spin
- accents like galvanized planters that add a touch of industrial chic!
Colors that work well with modern farmhouse style
Creating this style in your own home starts with an understanding of its color palette – a neutral palette such as whites, grays, and creams are staples in this calming design style.
This neutral color palette, creates a calming backdrop for accent colors such as blues, and green based on nature.
Also think about adding contrast with industrial gray, graphite and black accents. My philosophy is: you can never have too many black accent features in your home.
You can then add touches of wood tones and brighter colors yellow and deep orange for an on-trend look.

Modern farmhouse furniture styles
Natural wood pieces with a classic silhouette are at the core of this look, giving it warmth and a sense of history.
Chipped, worn, rustic or even vintage furniture, combined with clean lines and contemporary design details is what will elevate a space from farmhouse to modern farmhouse. The key is to bring in those Scandinavian and Organic Modern touches. This will tone down the country style farmhouse feel and bring it to a more modern, present-day farmhouse feel.

Combining reclaimed wood items and rustic elements with geometric shapes and clean lines will lend a more modern feel to the design.
A mix of both classic and contemporary styles is key when selecting furniture items with this look.
Neutral fabrics give a nod to the modern farmhouse style, while pops of patterned accessories add layers of modern charm.
With a few thoughtful furniture additions, you have all you need to create the perfect farmhouse modern combination!
Modern farmhouse interiors – accessorize like a pro!
When it comes to decorating a Modern Farmhouse style home, you’ll want to look for metal accessories like vintage-style light fixtures and wall sconces. Bring in elements of warmth with rustic accents, such as wicker baskets, jute rugs, and white ceramic vases.
When choosing a large area rug to anchor the room, look for a natural fiber weave or a classic pattern like gingham checks or houndstooth.
Think about adding focal point accent pieces like an antique mirror, a distressed bench or an oversized wooden clock. These pieces will add personality to your decor and make it feel more like home.
Adding green tones to any living space is always a must! Add green hues with some plants in woven baskets and terracotta planters to bring some nature indoors!
Don’t forget to hunt around thrift stores and antique markets for original vintage elements such as lace curtains and original paintings to bring your space alive.
