Have you ever heard the expression, “it all started with a picture”? That pretty much sums up my dining room makeover. Only it was inspired by a table. A table I had my eye on for several months and was just waiting for my schedule to open up to build it. At the first opportunity, I drew up the plans and went to work on this beautiful West Elm inspired dining table….

Being able to seat as many as possible around the table was very important to me. And the best way to do that, was to build a bench. Adding this 6 1/2 foot bench to our 7 foot table allowed for 10 to 12 of us to comfortably gather around the table. This slatted bench was a combination of benches I really liked, fused into one design….

Slats added to modern slatted dining room bench

My farmhouse light with the new modern dining room table and bench, were screaming: “one of these things is not like the other.”

But rather than get rid of my light, I decided to give it a makeover too. I’m so happy I did! It’s design is so unique to anything I saw online! I love it! And not buying a new light, saved me money! So, that’s a WIN! (Here’s how I did it!)

With all of these furniture changes, it was now time to change up the walls. My favorite go-to wall treatment is board and batten. I love the timelessness of it and already had one accent wall with it. So, I decided to finish off the room by adding board and batten to the rest of the walls….

Dining room with a table, chairs and a bench on a rug

Of course, I had to get a rug. Because, well, a dining table needs a rug, right? 🙂 AND the more practical reason–the two wood stains (flooring and table) were competing with one another. Adding a rug broke up the contrasting wood tones, grounded the table and brought new texture/colors to the room. Perfect!

What started with a table, not only led to a complete dining room makeover, but with our open-concept home, jumped into the living room and foyer too!
