How High Should You Hang Your Curtains?
First things first. How high should we hang the curtain rod? This will make all the difference in the overall look of your room’s design. It can truly make or break a room.
The Golden Rule for Curtain Rod Height
For a classic look, hang curtain rods 4-6 inches above the window frame. This placement helps frame the window beautifully and creates a balanced look. I call this the “playing it safe” curtain rule. But rarely does this curtain placement add that wow factor.

For a Taller Room Effect
For a more dramatic effect, mount your curtain rods closer to the ceiling—about 2 inches below the ceiling or crown molding. This makes your ceiling feel higher and your windows appear bigger. It’s amazing how this simple adjustment can change the look of an entire room.

It not only works wonders for small spaces or rooms with low ceilings, but it also gives the room a more spacious and upscale feel. By drawing the eyes upward, this technique makes a room feel more open and airy, adding a polished and intentional touch to the space.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Hanging curtains too low: This makes windows look smaller and ceilings lower.
- Not extending the rod wide enough: The curtain rod should extend at least 6-12 inches beyond the window frame on both sides.
- Choosing the wrong curtain length: Too short, and it looks awkward. Too long, and it can be a tripping hazard.

Choosing the Right Curtain Length
Floor-Length Curtains (Most Common & Stylish)
Floor-length curtains are the go-to choice for most homes. They strike the perfect balance between style and practicality, making any room feel put together without being overly formal. If you’re unsure which length to choose, this is usually a safe bet.
- Just grazes or barely “kisses” the floor.
- Works best for living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms.
- Provides a clean, polished look.

Puddling Curtains (Dramatic & Luxurious)
If you’re going for a dramatic and elevated look, puddling curtains might be the right choice. This style, where the fabric pools onto the floor, is all about creating a luxurious, high-end feel. It works best in spaces that don’t get a lot of foot traffic.
- Curtains extend 6-12 inches onto the floor.
- Best for formal spaces or romantic aesthetics.
- Works well with velvet, linen, or heavy drapes.

Floating Curtains (Practical & Crisp)
Floating curtains are perfect if you want a clean, modern look. They hover just above the floor, making them a great choice for areas where you don’t want fabric dragging—like kids’ rooms or high-traffic spaces.
- Hangs about ½ inch above the floor.
- Perfect for high-traffic areas, kids’ rooms, or modern interiors.
- Offers a clean, no-fuss finish.

Café-Length Curtains (Short & Charming)
Café-length curtains are a charming way to add privacy while still letting in plenty of light. They’re especially popular in kitchens and bathrooms, where full-length drapes might feel too heavy or impractical.
- Covers only the height of the window.
- Ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and casual spaces.
- Great for letting in natural light while maintaining privacy.

My Personal Opinion
When it comes to curtain length, I prefer a balance between floor-length and puddling curtains. I like my curtains to just kiss the floor with a slight puddle—about 2 inches at most. Anything more than that feels excessive to me.
Personally, I’m not a fan of floating curtains or café-length curtains. In most cases, I believe curtains should extend to the floor for a more polished look. If a window calls for a shorter treatment, I typically opt for a Roman shade or blinds instead.
Special Situations: Finding the Right Fit
Bay Windows
Bay windows add character to a room but can be tricky when it comes to hanging curtains. To maintain a cohesive look, use multiple rods that meet at the angles or a flexible track rod system that curves with the shape of the window. This ensures smooth curtain movement while keeping the design visually appealing.
The picture below is the option I would go with, if it were my space. Bay windows are typically beautiful and I hate to cover them up!

Floor-to-Ceiling Windows
Large, floor-to-ceiling windows make a bold statement, but they also require carefully chosen curtain treatments. Opt for custom-length drapes that extend all the way to the floor for a tailored look.
If you want to maximize the effect, install rods wall-to-wall to create a seamless and dramatic appearance.
Small Windows
Even small windows can make a big impact with the right curtain placement. Extend rods at least 6-12 inches beyond the window frame on both sides to create the illusion of a larger window. Choosing long, floor-length curtains instead of short ones can also help make the space feel taller and more open.
Below is a rendering I did for a client. The natural solution is to choose shorter curtains. However, this is a huge mistake.
Shorter curtains cuts the wall in half. It makes it less visually appealing for the eye. The longer curtains calm the eye and allow it to move seamlessly from floor to ceiling. Not to mention, how it adds height and depth to the space.

Sliding Glass Doors
Sliding glass doors need curtains that are both stylish and functional. Use extra-long panels on a traverse rod, which allows for smooth and easy movement.
If privacy and light control are priorities, consider layered curtains—such as sheer panels for daytime and blackout curtains for the evening.
Curtain Rod Placement Tips
Getting the curtain rod placement right can make all the difference in how your curtains look and function. The right positioning enhances the height of your windows, makes the room feel larger, and ensures that your curtains hang beautifully. Here are some key tips to get it just right.
- Extend rods 6-12 inches past the window frame for a wider, airier look.
- Use double rods to layer sheer and blackout curtains for versatility.
- Consider brackets that extend rods farther from the wall for a fuller, more luxurious drape.
The right curtain length and height can make a huge difference in your space. Whether you want to create a grand, elevated look or simply frame your windows beautifully, following these guidelines will help you achieve a designer-worthy space.
