As the saying goes, you only get one chance to make a first impression. This holds true in your home too. The very first room your guests see is your entryway. And the very first thing they step onto, is your entryway rug. Therefore, one of the most important interior design decisions you can make for your home is choosing the best entryway rug.

With so many patterns, colors and rug material to choose from, choosing the right entryway rug can be a daunting task.

Your entryway is one of the most high-traffic areas of your home. For this reason, it’s important to choose a high quality rug that can withstand daily wear and tear while also adding a touch of style and warmth to your space.

Need help knowing where to start? Whether you have a small or large entryway space, finding the perfect entryway rug is the first step to transforming your home’s welcome area into a stylish and functional focal point.

Below, I’ve pulled together the best entryway rugs. Perfect for any budget, space and needs. But before we find the ideal choice for your entryway area rug, let’s discuss the important elements involved in choosing the right one.

Finding the Best Entryway Rugs Material

When it comes to picking the right material for your entryway rug, you’ll encounter various options to match your preferences and needs. Here are some popular choices:

  • Wool: Known for its natural warmth and durability, wool offers a luxurious feel and is great at resisting stains.
  • Cotton: A more affordable option, cotton is comfortable, easy to maintain, and comes in a wide range of designs.
  • Synthetic materials: Fibers like polyester and polypropylene are practical and budget-friendly. They are highly resistant to wear and tear, making them ideal for busy entryways.
  • Natural materials: Sisal, seagrass and jute rugs are all made of natural materials. The perfect rug for an entryway.

Each material has its own advantages. It really comes down to your lifestyle and personal preference.

Finding the Right Size

  1. You’ll need a tape measure.
  2. Measure the width of your entryway from one wall to the opposite wall. Be sure to consider any furniture or doorways that might impact the placement of the rug.
  3. Measure the length of your entryway, again considering any obstacles.
  4. Leave some extra space around the edges of your rug to create a stylish framing effect.
  5. A good rule of thumb, is to leave about 6-8 inches of space from the wall on each side of the rug.

The size of your rug should be in balance with the size of your entryway.

If the rug is too small, the entryway will feel like something isn’t right. It will make the room look choppy and smaller than it actually is.

When the entryway rug is too big, it can make the space feel cramped.

The key to finding that sweet spot, is finding a rug that anchors the room, without dominating it.

Consider the Ideal Thickness for Your Entryway Rug

While the size of the rug is important, the pile height can make or break a space. There is nothing more annoying than a door that won’t open easily because the rug is too thick.

A good choice for an entryway with a low door clearance is a low-pile rug. Low pile rugs have a pile height less than 1/4″. Most doors can clear this thickness of rug.

Considered a low profile rug, jute rugs or any rug made with natural fibers, typically work well in an entry way. Not to mention, they’re a good idea in spaces with a lot of foot traffic.

Jute rugs are my rug of choice. I love their neutral color tone, natural materials, and easy maintenance. They work great on hardwood floors or virtually any floor space.

Wool rugs are another great choice for a low profile rug. When cared for properly, they can last a long time.

How to Keep Your Entryway Rug From Slipping

Next to the annoying door that won’t open because the rug is too thick is the annoying rug that won’t stay in place. An even bigger problem is the safety hazard this can present.

A good, quality rug pad is a great way to prevent your rug from sliding all over the place. Investing in a rug pad actually has many great benefits:

  • Aside from preventing slipping, it can also prevent the rug from curling up on the corners
  • Absorb the shock from foot traffic
  • Helps prevent dirt and grime from building up under the rug
  • Absorbs sounds
  • Makes a rug feel softer on the feet

Best Entryway Rugs: What’s Your Style?

You can have the right size and material of rug, but if it doesn’t fit the style of your space, it’s not the right rug. Style matters!

I have a post all about how to find your interior design style. You can check it out here!

When selecting the right entryway rug, consider its design and how it fits your space. Your rug should complement your overall decor and style. Consider your existing color scheme and the ambiance you wish to create.

  • For a traditional feel, choose a timeless style. Like geometric patterns and stripes.
  • For a more modern entryway, opt for bold, bright colors and contemporary designs.
  • For a more luxurious feel, choose a neutral color tone with a soft texture.

While rugs are functional, they are also part of your decor. They should be both visually appealing and welcoming.

Best Entryway Rugs FAQ’s

What color of rug will show the least amount of dirt?

Rugs in darker colors like navy, brown, or charcoal gray tend to hide dirt and stains better. These colors are more forgiving, especially in high traffic areas like entryways.

You can also consider rugs with patterns or speckled designs. They’re great at distracting the eye from any dirt or stains.

Should I choose a rectangular or round rug for my entryway?

Rectangular Rug: These work well in most entryways and match the shape of the space. However, while they’re versatile, they may not be the best choice for small spaces or a narrow entryway.

Round Rug: These add a unique touch and are great for larger or square entryways. They soften the corners but may not fit well in very narrow spaces.

Are there special considerations for rug placement in narrow entryways?

For narrow entryways:

  • Use an entryway runner rug: It’s long and narrow, perfect for the space.
  • Center it: Place the rug in the middle, leaving space on each side.
  • Avoid wall-to-wall: Don’t cover the whole floor; leave some visible.
  • Keep it minimal: Use minimal furniture to avoid clutter.
  • Choose colors wisely: Light colors and subtle patterns can make the space feel larger.
