Looking for exterior curb appeal ideas that will turn heads? This post has 11 game changing DIY’s that will make a huge statement.

A few summers ago we made some huge curb appeal improvements on our home. I’m not sure why I always say, “we”…because in reality it was actually mostly, “I”.

Not to pat myself on the back, but the truth is-my husband is not a DIY’er at all…never has been and I’m guessing, never will be. But that’s ok, because I love this stuff.

And I love sharing my projects with you and hopefully inspiring you to give them a go, even if your husband isn’t a DIY’er either! We’ve got this ladies!! Let’s go!

Limewashed brick, new paint colors, updated garage doors, and a front porch refresh are just a few ways I improved my home’s curb appeal.

Whether you’re wanting to swoon potential buyers or just wanting to update for your own enjoyment, these 11 curb appeal projects are a great way to bring new life to your home.

11 Exterior Curb Appeal Ideas That Make a Huge Statement

Curb appeal idea #1: Update your brick exterior

The number one and most impactful improvement project I completed, a few summers back, was limewashing our brick.

I have gotten so many compliments on our home since doing this very simple project. It literally took me one day to complete!

I started in the morning and was finished before the sun went down. I actually had time to make it to a graduation party that evening. It was a fun and rewarding project. Just look at the huge difference it made….

Want a brand new, fresh look for the exterior of your home? Limewash will make a big impact.

I’ve had so many people reach out to me and ask for advice on whether or not their home would be a good candidate for this. With a few exceptions, most of the time, the answer is yes.

It’s amazing what this change will do to boost the curb appeal of your home. Still not sure? Send me a picture of your home and we can talk through it.

I love helping people walk through whether this is the right decision for them, or not. AND I love helping people discover that they can do this on their own. It’s so easy!

Just shoot me an email, and let’s talk….nicole@designtobuildblog.com

Idea #2: Update exterior paint colors

Of course after lime washing the exterior brick of our home, it was in desperate need of a new paint job.

Wow! Waiting for the painters to show up was the hardest part. The neighbors had to be a bit concerned. Haha!

This was not the color scheme I was going for….

While I try to do as much as I can on my own, this one-I hired out. :) I don’t do high peaks! :(

With the fresh coat of paint and a new pop of color, I was in love! Not regretting one bit, the paint colors we chose for our exterior and painting our windows black–best move!!

We went with 3 colors that all complement one another very well, for our exterior.

Let’s break down the colors…

As a side note: Behr Marquee Ultra Pure White is my go-to paint color choice for white. It is the only TRUE white color I have ever been able to find. Pure white through and through. No hint of gray or yellow. If you’re looking for a true white, this is the one.

More details about the exterior paint project can be found here.

Idea #3: Update your front door

The front door is so important when looking to boost curb appeal. So many people fail to take advantage of this simple statement piece.

One of the easiest elements to update on the exterior of your home, is your front door. It can be as easy as a new fresh coat of paint in a bold color that will pop and make the door stand out. While still complementing the other colors of the home, of course.

Or, you may find that it’s time for an upgrade. Boosting your home’s value, a new front door can be a great investment.

After our home received its new coat of paint, we realized it was time. Time to update our existing door.

I found this beautiful, stand-out door at Home Depot. Love all of those windows and the natural light that flows through.

First impressions matter and this front door makes a huge impact….

Curb appeal idea #4: Update your garage door

I found an easy way to update our garage doors without breaking the bank. Going a little ways back into the archives, I added these faux windows to our garage doors about 4 years ago.

I love the craftsman look they give the garage doors and our house. The great thing is you can paint them to match whatever color you paint your garage door now, or in the future.

They have held up very well and truly look like real windows. People are always shocked that they’re not real. Adding the carriage house hardware was also a nice touch.

Idea #5: Add shutters

Another super easy, affordable change is adding new shutters. I helped my parents boost their curb appeal, by adding these new DIY shutters. They’re so easy to make!

If we didn’t already have shutters, I would definitely be adding them to our home.

The before and after pics are incredible. You can check out both in this post. But for now, here’s a look at the after shot…

Idea #6: Add a flower box (or two…)

A quick and easy feature to add to your home’s exterior are window boxes. We have a faux window on the front of our house that I have always wanted to accent, but never really knew what to add.

The flower box I added, a few summers ago, was exactly what it needed.

I love the beautiful color the flowers add against the backdrop of the house. By the end of the summer, they are so full and lovely!

The best part–it costs less than $15 to make and looks so much better than any store-bought flower box….

Curb appeal idea #7: Add modern outdoor chairs

If we had a large wrap around porch (#dream!), I would display these gorgeous modern outdoor chairs, in all their glory, for all to see. But since our front porch is small, these two chairs, I built a few summers ago, reside on our back deck.

They do make for a comfy spot to sit with my hot tea and devotional on warm summer mornings. After price checking these last summer, building them myself definitely made the most sense! And once again–EASY!

Go check out how to build these modern chairs, here.

Idea #8: Add a tall planter

After adding these flower boxes to my back pergola area, I knew I wanted to build more of them. I just wasn’t sure where else I would put one. But then I saw it! In front of our dining room window, of course!

Not only does this create visual interest to the front of our home, but it’s also quite lovely to be able to enjoy the flowers while sitting at our dining room table too.

Not wanting to spend more money on seasonal flowers, I decided to go with perennials for this planter box. Sedum is what I chose. I love the pop of green it gives to the space.

And when they flower later in the summer, their radiant color is beautiful against the front of the house. And the best part, no green thumb required; they come back every year. :)

Idea #9: Paint your front porch black

Just like the front door needs to pop, your front porch should stand out too. Painting our front porch black had me wondering, why I didn’t do it sooner. Knowing I wanted a fresh new look, at first I painted it white. But that was not it…

Front porch recently painted white. Wooden front door.

I didn’t like how it just blended in with the rest of the house. Nothing stood out about it. So, after staring at it for what seemed like an eternity, while the wheels were turning inside my head, it hit me. Paint it black!! Of course!

Why didn’t I think of that to begin with. When in doubt, paint it black, is my motto. So, it was the most obvious thing to do. And wow!!! It was exactly the look I was going for…

While we have a somewhat small front porch, this simple change gave it a whole new look. So Good!!!

Idea #10: Paint your down spouts and gutters black

Of course, I couldn’t leave well enough alone. I had to keep going. What if I painted the down spouts and gutters black too? Let’s find out! I started with the gutters and eaves above the garage, knowing I could easily paint them back to their original color, if need be.

But there was no need! Yes! It looked SO GOOD! Once again, it had me wondering, “why did I wait so long to do this?”

If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to bring new life to the front of your home, this is it! Paint is cheap! And this change brings instant curb appeal…

Curb appeal idea #11: Add new lighting

While I would ultimately LOVE to add industrial grade spotlights to my home (in a very tasteful way, of course–haha!), that is not in the budget. What I want is not cheap!!

So, for now, I add outdoor lighting however, and wherever I can. This entails spotlights lighting up the entire front of our house in the winter. My husband shines them up from the front yard.

We’re able to do this in the winter because the lawn is not getting mowed. It would be a pain in the butt in the summer to move those constantly, so we put them away until winter.

So, I guess I have what I want 6 months out of the year. Haha! The remaining six months, I settle for just the landscape lighting. It’s all good.

It took me a few tries to find solar lights that I really liked. Ones that actually put out a decent amount of light and lasted longer than one season. But I found them!

These solar lights are awesome!! They fit both my criteria: long-lasting and put out a significant amount of light.
